Learn something new every day... I did not realize that synonyms do not have to be bidirectional. Ensure and insure both "mean 'to make certain,' but only insure can mean 'indemnify against loss'". (Source: Thesaurus.com) I had incorrectly assumed that the two words were never synonyms.
